The calendar design by Laurel Marx features bold orange gradient typography spelling "VAYA VINYL" against a charcoal gray background, with each month showcasing a different Cuban album cover. The cover and interior pages display iconic vinyl record artwork including Silvio Rodríguez's mosaic-style "Rabo de Nube" design and other EGREM releases. The clean, modern layout allows the vintage album artwork to take center stage while maintaining contemporary visual appeal, reflecting both the historical significance and ongoing vitality of Cuban graphic design.
This wall calendar celebrates the art of Cuban album covers since 1959, an art form that nearly disappeared but is now experiencing vibrant resurgence. Curated by Center for Cuban Studies staff and occasional outside consultants, the collection features works by Cuba's most talented artists including painter Umberto Peña, photographers Mayito and Marucha, and graphic designer Bachs. As vinyl makes a comeback, these covers serve as works of art in their own right, capturing moments in Cuba's rich musical heritage. The calendar represents the Center's ongoing mission since 1972 to bridge Cuban and U.S. cultures through art, education, and exchange programs from their location at 20 Jay Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn.
