"Wifredo Lam" is a comprehensive monograph published by Editorial José Martí's Publicaciones en Lenguas Extranjeras (Publications in Foreign Languages) division in 1997, featuring an introduction by Cuban art critic and intellectual Graziella Pogolotti. The cover presents a striking black and white portrait photograph by Julio Berestein showing Lam in contemplative pose with his hand near his face, wearing a light-colored suit jacket against a dark background. The artist's name appears in large letters across the cover—"WIFREDO" in coral-orange at the top and "LAM" at the bottom with the letters "L" and "M" rendered in green and coral respectively, creating a subtle visual reference to the Cuban flag's colors.
Designed by Eduardo Moltó with electronic composition by Beatriz Roussó and editing by Elisa Pardo, Iraida Sánchez, and Blanca Acosta, the book was translated into English by Mary Todd. The volume includes more than fifty plates from the collection of the Cuban National Museum of Fine Arts, a chronology drafted by the Centro Wifredo Lam, and Pogolotti's critical analysis offering enriching judgments that demonstrate her vast knowledge and provide a critical interpretation allowing readers to measure Lam's stature. The book received technical advice from José M. Noceda of the Centro Wifredo Lam, who oversaw the painter's chronology and plate selection, as well as expert Concepción Otero from the Art Department of the University of Havana. Published by the Instituto Cubano del Libro with ISBN 959-09-0094-1, the book was printed by Imprime S.S.A.G., S.L. in Madrid, Spain, reflecting international collaboration in preserving and disseminating Lam's artistic legacy during Cuba's Special Period.
