"Algo sobre Apreciación Musical" (Something about Musical Appreciation) is a music education text by Cuban composer and conductor Amadeo Roldán (1900-1939), published posthumously by Editorial Letras Cubanas in Havana in 1980 with cover design by renowned Cuban artist Raúl Martínez and editing by Silvana Carrega. The vibrant cover features a striking pattern of musical notation rendered in blue staves with red rectangular blocks containing white musical notes, creating a rhythmic visual composition against a cream background. The title and author's name appear in bold black letters between bands of this musical notation pattern. The back cover displays a clever typographic design where the word "música" incorporates actual musical note symbols into the lettering.
Roldán, who died tragically young at age 39, was one of Cuba's most important twentieth-century composers and a pioneering figure in incorporating Afro-Cuban musical elements into concert music. He served as director of the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra and was deeply committed to music education. The prologue explains that Roldán composed and taught didactic music, sought and achieved greater understanding of musical composition and appreciation among the general public, and understood music in pedagogical terms as something that enriches the spirit and educates the listener. His work presaged the essential concepts that would later be recognized as fundamental in musical education. This 1980 publication represents Cuba's commitment to preserving and disseminating the pedagogical legacy of its cultural pioneers, making Roldán's insights accessible to new generations of music students and enthusiasts during the revolutionary period.
