Social was one of Cuba's most influential elite magazines, founded by brothers Conrado W. Massaguer and Oscar H. Massaguer in 1916. While the Massaguers' later creation, Carteles, would achieve wider circulation among the middle class, Social catered to Cuba's upper class and best represented Massaguer's artistic and cultural influence. This July 1936 issue features a striking Art Deco cover by Conrado W. Massaguer himself, depicting a woman in a bathing suit rendered in elegant white lines against a vibrant orange-red background—a celebration of summer leisure and the modernist "New Woman" aesthetic that Massaguer championed. The legendary caricaturist and graphic artist Conrado W. Massaguer (1889-1965) helped shape Cuban visual culture through his magazines and work for Cuba's Tourist Commission, synthesizing North American, European, and Latin American artistic trends. Social published from 1916-1933 and again from 1935-1937, featuring cutting-edge graphic design, society news, and cultural commentary that made Massaguer a tastemaker in Cuban high society.
