The cover design by Niko presents a striking visual metaphor: a high-contrast halftone photograph of a guitarist overlaid with an explosion of multicolored concentric circles bursting from the guitar's sound hole. The psychedelic pattern—rendered in vibrant red, blue, green, yellow, and orange rings—suggests sound waves radiating outward, transforming acoustic energy into visual form. This fusion of photographic realism and abstract geometric design captures the experimental spirit of both Viglietti's performance and the GESI ensemble's innovative approach to Cuban music.
This album documents Uruguayan singer-songwriter Daniel Viglietti's collaboration with Cuba's legendary Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC, featuring arrangements by some of Cuba's most important musicians and composers. The repertoire includes protest songs by Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo (including a Bertolt Brecht adaptation), alongside compositions by nueva trova founders Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés. GESI, founded in 1969 under Leo Brouwer's direction, revolutionized Cuban music by blending nueva trova, experimental composition, and political consciousness. This recording exemplifies the solidarity between Latin American nueva canción movements during the 1970s.
