The cover design and photography by Marucha presents a haunting double-exposed portrait overlaid with vibrant orange and yellow tropical flowers, creating a dreamlike fusion of human presence and natural abundance. The textured, weathered treatment gives the image an archaeological quality, as if unearthing layers of memory and sound. The title "CONCATENACIÓN I" (Concatenation I) appears in rough, hand-painted orange letters at the bottom, suggesting the linking of musical ideas and improvisational chains that characterized the group's experimental jazz approach.
This album documents a live recording at the Teatro del Museo de Bellas Artes in Havana, showcasing Grupo Proyecto under the leadership of pianist and composer Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Recorded in 1986 at EGREM studios with recording and mixing by Jerry Bole, the album features extended compositions including Rubalcaba's "Nueva Cubana" and "Concatenación Heroica," plus his arrangement of "Green Dolphin Street." Grupo Proyecto represented the cutting edge of Cuban jazz in the 1980s, synthesizing Afro-Cuban rhythms with advanced harmonic language and virtuosic improvisation. Rubalcaba would go on to become one of Cuba's most internationally acclaimed jazz pianists.
