SANDRA DOOLEY b. Havana, 1964, lives in the seaside town of Santa Fe, just outside of Havana, with her chef-painter husband. She is a painter, works in mixed media and recently took up printmaking as well. She is a self-taught artist – she was teaching English to young students when she decided she wanted to paint instead. Her paintings reflect her daily life at home with her family, friends, dogs and cats. The women are often reflective and thoughtful, life is familiar and intimate. Sandra’s paintings of black women in Cuba were commissioned especially for a CCS exhibit as part of the “Harlem-Havana” celebration. She has exhibited widely in the U.S. including a personal exhibit at the Center for Cuban Studies in 2010 when she traveled outside of Cuba for the first time to inaugurate the exhibit. She has participated in more than 80 group shows in the U.S., Canada and France and is a popular exhibitor at the Santa Fe Folk Art Fair in New Mexico. Her works are in the private collections of many known collectors in the U.S.
