"Esta es una fuerza temible e invencible" (This is a terrible and invincible force) was a commemorative portfolio published to mark the 20th anniversary of Cuba's victory at Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs) on April 19, 1961, when Cuban forces defeated the CIA-backed invasion attempt. The title quotes from a speech by Fidel Castro delivered on January 20, 1981, at the founding ceremony of the Milicias de Tropas Territoriales (Territorial Troop Militias) in Granma province, Guisa—linking historical revolutionary defense with contemporary preparations for territorial defense.
The portfolio was produced by the Departamento de Ciencia, Cultura y Centros Docentes del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba (Department of Science, Culture and Teaching Centers of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba) in collaboration with Ediciones UNIÓN, the publishing house of UNEAC (Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba). The project supported the creation of the territorial militias, connecting Cuba's revolutionary defense tradition with ongoing preparations against potential U.S. aggression during the Cold War era.
The cover design by Héctor Villaverde is a masterwork of revolutionary graphic design—a vibrant orange-red field with the bold declarative title set in massive black condensed letterforms that dominate the lower portion of the cover. The typography's geometric solidity and aggressive scale embody the militant strength proclaimed in Castro's words. The stacked letterforms create architectural weight, suggesting fortification and immovability. The stark two-color scheme (red field, black type) echoes classic revolutionary poster aesthetics while the condensed sans-serif typeface projects industrial power and modern socialist design principles.
The portfolio contains photographs by José Oller documenting the territorial militias and was printed at the Poligráfico "Federico Engels" in Havana. This publication represents the intersection of Cuban revolutionary commemoration, graphic design excellence, and political mobilization during a period of heightened Cold War tensions in the early 1980s.
