Nuez (René de la Nuez) - "Los Monstruos de la Globalización Neoliberal" (1999)
A sharp political satire by Cuba's legendary caricaturist Nuez (René de la Nuez), published by the World Data Research Center in Havana. This collection of editorial cartoons depicts neoliberal globalization as literal monsters—representing the World Bank (BM), International Monetary Fund (FMI), and global market forces—that prey on working people demanding bread, work, and jobs.
The cover cartoon brilliantly captures the Cuban revolutionary position: one figure declares "Globalization is inevitable!" while a small person protests "Globalization yes, but neoliberalism, no!" The cartoons use Nuez's distinctive bold line work and satirical style to critique international financial institutions and market capitalism from a socialist perspective.
René de la Nuez began his professional career in 1957 with the character "El Loquito" and became famous for his revolutionary cartoons. From 1959, he published in all Cuban press and on TV, serving as Granma newspaper's caricaturist for over 30 years. He won more than 100 national and international prizes, and his work has been reproduced throughout the Americas and Europe. He was an honorary professor at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Spain.
A powerful example of Cuban political cartoon art critiquing global capitalism at the turn of the millennium.
