Zaida del Rio, born in Remedios, Villa Clara Province in 1954, started her artistic career in the 70s. Since then, her artwork has spiraled in prestige, placing her among Cuba's top artists.
Zaida del Rio studied at the Cienfuegos Art School(1960-1971), Havana's National Art School(1971-1974), and the Institute of Higher Art(1982-1987). She also graduated from the Ecole de Beaux, in Paris, France. She has taught engraving and drawing and has since become a member of Cuba's National Union of Writers and Artists and of the International Association of Visual Artists (AIAP).
As a painter, illustrator, ceramist, engraver and poet, she has presented individual and collective exhibits mostly in Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Havana, Cuba, but also in Algeria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, Holland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Puerto Rico, Rumania, Soviet Union, Spain, Sweden, the United States, Venezuela, and Yugoslavia.
She has illustrated numerous books and magazines and has received several awards in Cuba and internationally. Recently, she has been combining her painting with dance and other cultural expressions.
