This poster commemorates the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Patrice Lumumba (1925-1961), the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who was murdered on January 17, 1961. Lumumba became a symbol of African independence and anti-colonial resistance. OSPAAAL regularly honored African liberation leaders and anti-imperialist martyrs, and Lumumba's assassination—orchestrated with Belgian and U.S. involvement—made him an iconic figure in Third World solidarity movements.
